Balance is the key.
Like all things in life, a balanced cleansing regimen is the way to go.
To much or to little are often to blame for irritation and slow healing.
Like all things in life, a balanced cleansing regimen is the way to go.
To much or to little are often to blame for irritation and slow healing.
In a nutshell:
"Your Piercings are a Conscious Commitment to Yourself.
You must clean and look after your piercings daily."
General Piercing Aftercare:
Neilmed Sterile Saline Solution is the most update to date method of fast, graceful healing. You can purchase the Nasal Saline Solution at any chemist. It is a safe, natural way to remove any dirt, debris, or bacteria with out any pain or irritation.
You can also make your own with 1/4 teaspoon sea salt to 8ounces of boiled, cooled water.
The saline solution is recommended because it is sterile for each use.
Gently clean the piercing site with the Saline solution saturated cotton bud or pad twice a day for the entirety of the healing process. Could take 2-9 months depending on the piercing.
The piercing must be kept as clean as possible until it becomes just a hole and is completely healed.
Living a relatively healthy lifestyle is essential to healing and that includes piercings.
A healthy, whole food diet, rest and plenty of water will usually do the trick.
Do not remove the initial piercing jewellery or switch to new jewellery until the piercing is completely healed.
Can I swim right after my piercing?
You will want to avoid submerging in baths, pools, lakes, hot tubs, and the ocean for a minimum of 6 weeks.
Showers only for the first 6 weeks. Be sure to rinse your piercing with fresh water after submerging in any chlorine or ocean water for the remaining healing time.
Also Best to Avoid:
Cleansing with any harsh chemicals, ie: Rubbing Alcohol, Hydrogen Peroxide, Bepathen, Sudocream etc.
Do not allow Fake tan, makeup, cosmetics to come in contact with your piercing.
We have learned over time that these products are too harsh for piercings and will cause drying, irritation, redness, soreness, swelling, and will prolong the healing process.
Do not touch or twist your piercing while healing.
Touching your piercing throughout the day with unclean hands will lead to a bacterial infection and swelling.
Things To Keep in Mind:
The new Piercing is an open wound with a foreign object in it. Please treat it as such, as touching it with dirty hands will cause excess swelling and possibly an infection.
The piercing will naturally drain healthy fluids in the first days and maybe for longer.
If left to dry, these will form crusts, which will be rough and can harbour bacteria.
It is important to soak those crusts with the saline spray, soften them, gently remove them and afterwards DRY the area.
Failure to keep the piercing exit wounds clear, will cause smelly crusts to accumulate which will harbour bacteria and grow over time. The healthy fluids will not be able to drain and will form bumps on the exit wounds, which if left untreated for a long time can develop into keloid.
Cartilage Piercing Care
Do Not Sleep on that Ear
We have installed your fresh piercing with a longer bar or wider diameter piece of jewellery because your piercing as with all fresh wounds are likely to swell. The larger piece of jewellery allows room for this.
If at any point during the healing process your jewellery is feeling tight, is looking like it’s too short or doesn't have any extra room for swelling, contact and visit us asap so we can support you in preventing embedding.
After 4-6 weeks you should notice the swelling to be considerably less. At this point, it is very important to return to us for a check-up. If your piercing is ready, we will replace with a shorter, snugger fitting piece of jewellery.
Failure to downsize your piercing post can result in the piercing healing at an crooked angle, affecting the direction your jewellery is facing.
Jewellery Care
We always check the jewellery upon receiving stock and also twice before fitting.
You should also check your piercing jewellery please.
The piercing jewellery used is delicate by its very nature and is designed to be removed, so it can come loose whilst handling or cleaning.
You must regularly check and tighten the attachments on your jewellery.
If your jewellery gets lost, the replacement must be purchased again.
Infections
Quite often, people who suspect an infection actually have an irritation and adjusting the aftercare can fix the problem.
Signs of an infection are sudden inflammation and discharge of pus and/or blood. If you suspect that you have an infection, contact your body piercer or your doctor at once.
Do not wait for it to get worse.
If in doubt just contact us or call in at your earliest convenience.
You and you alone are responsible for the wellness of your piercing but we hope we can pass on our knowledge to you to support you in your piercing's healing process. Thank you.
